What is Low-E Glass?

Outstanding energy efficiency is one of Brighton’s hallmarks as a new home builder in Meridian ID. Our homes go above and beyond what is required by current homebuilding standards.

One way we do this is by installing low-E windows in every Brighton home. You’ve probably heard of low-E glass and may wonder what it means.

What is Low-E Glass?

Low-E means “low emissivity.” The windows are coated with microscopic layers of metal oxides to slow heat transfer through the glass. This coating reduces the amount of heat entering the house from the sun and limits heat loss from inside the house in winter.

Benefits to Homeowners

In the average house, 30% of winter heat loss happens through conventional windows and doors. Low-E glass can reduce heat loss by up to 50%. It also reduces heat gain from the sun’s infrared rays in warmer months. As a result, the glass helps homeowners save on utility bills.

Climate Considerations

Because it reduces the need for heating and cooling, low-E glass can reduce your home’s carbon footprint and have a smaller environmental impact than a house with traditional clear glass windows.

Additional Savings

Besides saving on utility bills, the lower use of the HVAC system can help it last longer. Also, since the sun’s UV and infrared rays are reflected away, upholstered furniture, artwork, carpet, and other materials won’t fade as fast as they would near normal windows. The NFRC sticker on the window will tell you how much natural light comes through the glass.

Low-E glass is just one of the many elements contributing to every Brighton home’s 100% Energy Star rating. Along with higher-than-required insulation levels, smart thermostats, high-efficiency HVAC systems, and Energy Star appliances, low-E windows contribute to making Brighton Homes 20-30% more efficient than the average home built in the last 20 years.
